NEWS: Cheek Hall 150 Lab goes 100!

Networking has submitted a work order to have Lucent implement 100 megabit Ethernet service for the Cheek Hall 150 laboratory.
Users of the lab should notice improved access to most central campus computing resources.  Users accessing the Internet will not benefit from this upgrade.

July 31st, 1998

Networking Administration has designed a 100 megabit solution for the Cheek Hall 150 computing laboratory.  Five shared 10 megabit Ethernet hubs making up a single repeater using stacking technology will be replaced with five shared hubs capable of running 10 or 100 megabit.  This could be important because 100 megabit service places higher demands upon the cabling systems and some older wire may not be capable of running the higher speeds.  Due to budget constraints, if any such wire is found, the port will be set to 10 megabits rather than replace the wiring.

Networking will be using our Fluke DSP100 test equipment to verify that each outlet can be switched to the higher speed.  Given the excellent quality of the wiring, parts, and installation techniques used by Lucent, no problems are expected with the newer outlets

The entire 233 subnet which services the lab and a few stations outside the lab will be down for about four hours while the electronics are replaced.  None of the workstations outside the lab, however, will be converted to 100 megabits.  The outage will occur sometime during the normal 8 to 5 workday to avoid overtime charges.  The exact time of this cut-over is unknown at this time, but will be published here once the information become available.

Users interested in 100 megabit service elsewhere should understand that the cost is $10 per month instead of the 10 megabit rate of $5 and should contact Mark Harsen to discuss the feasibility of delivering the higher-rate service to the desired location.
