: Access Servers use NT accounts.
Networking has updated the dial-in authentication process to be driven off of the
user's NT account. Use your NT account (without the domain) and password instead of
an old Unix or CMS account.
All users should start using their NT account immediately. Validation using Unix
or CMS accounts will be discontinued on November 2, 1998.
November 4, 1998
Effective immediately, all users (except for West Plains users) must use their windows
NT accounts to access all dial-up servers. This termination of older validation
services was originally planned for November 2nd, but was delayed to accommodate West
Plains users who currently have no option of using their NT accounts for remote access
validation.
November 2, 1998
Due to circumstances beyond our immediate control, the new dial in validation
techniques are not ready to service the West Plains Campus users. Consequently, the
termination of all validation techniques other than NT domain will not occur on schedule.
Check back here for updated information as it becomes available.
August 25, 1998
Networking Administration has purchased and installed new remote access
authentication software which allows dial-in users to connect with their Windows NT
account and password. Unlike the old Unix and CMS method, users are not required to
issue any commands (i.e. comserv -e) to enable dial-up access. All NT accounts in
the "gold" and "silver" domains automatically have dial-in access
immediately after the account has been created.
If you are using a script file to connect to Missouri State University's modem pool, simply change the
password from your Unix or CMS password to your Windows NT password. Everything
else works exactly as before.
If you are connecting manually, at the "Username:" prompt, simply enter your
Windows NT userid. DO NOT precede it with the domain name as is done to actually
login to an NT server. If you had a "gold" account "abc123s"
with a password of "gobears" you would enter "abc123s" at the
"Username:" prompt and "gobears" at the "Password:" prompt.
If you are still connecting with a Unix or CMS based password, you must change to your
NT account prior to November 2, 1998 when the service will be discontinued. The user
information and passwords for this older method of access were frozen on August 22, 1998
and the "comserv" commands were disabled system-wide. No new dial-in
accounts will be added and no dial-in passwords will be reset.
If you still have a "nic" account, for example, but you have forgotten the
password, you may get the "nic" account's password reset by going to one of the
main computer labs or the main window at Computer Services. This will allow you to
login into your Unix "nic" account, but it WILL NOT change the password in the
communication server's frozen password file. These passwords WILL NOT be
reset. To regain access to the modems, you must start using your Windows NT account
and password as indicated above.
The validation software first checks the "gold" domain, then the
"silver" domain, and finally it checks the frozen Unix and CMS password
data. It denies access only after it has tried all three places without finding a
match on both userid and password.
Please direct any questions or concerns to the assistants in the main computer labs, to
the Computer Services Help
Desk, or to the operators at the main Computer Services window in Cheek Hall 166.
