NEWS: Multicast Support added in Springfield
Multicast protocols have been enabled on the Springfield campus. Network
applications transmitting from a single source to many target machines can now use
multicast and improve efficiency.
All network users of one-to-many software applications such as Ghost, PointCast, and streaming audio or video can now enable multicast across the
Springfield network and could see dramatic improvements in performance.

Missouri State University Networking has successfully implemented and tested multicasting on the Springfield
campus. Multicast will be extended to West Plains, Mt. Grove, and to MOREnet in the
future. All system administrators of machines that run applications that can utilize
multicast protocols should reconfigure their servers to use this support. Doing so
will reduce the network bandwidth consumed by the applications and will provide a much
better level of service to users.
Known candidates for these protocols include:
 | Ghost |
|
Rebuilds multiple work stations using a single image from a server. |
 | PointCast |
|
Displays customizable pages of news information to multiple clients. |
 | Real Audio |
|
The constant audio source part, like a radio station, that users can
tune-in. |
 | streaming video |
|
A constant audio/video source, such as a future class lecture that can be
tuned-in. |
