NEWS: Dialup Time Limitation Lowered.Missouri State University Networking reduces maximum modem connection time to 3 hours. All off-campus dialup to Missouri State University Springfield modems are affected.October 12, 1999Monitoring of the Missouri State University dialup service indicates the modem banks are full typically from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Networking is the process of bidding more modems, however, in the meantime in order to distribute resources better, we are lowering the connect time from 4 hours to 3 hours per session. At the end of the 3 hour period, your session will be dropped giving other users a chance to connect. Unfortunately, no warning message can be sent prior to the call being dropped. If you wish to use the dialup service for more than three hours, you would need to reconnect for another session. This change will occur October 22 for Springfield dialup user only. Networking has procured funds for another 48 modems to be added, possibly as an "Express Pool" that would have a much shorter time limitation, but would allow users to connect quickly to check e-mail or perform a few quick Internet searches. This project has been delayed because the manufacturer, Cisco Systems Inc., has discontinued the "MicroCom" modems that work effectively at Missouri State University and has announced end-of-life and end-of-sales on the dial-up server we wished to purchase. (See Problematic Modems for information on Missouri State University's experience with Cisco's current modem offering.) We are attempting to locate another server or another source for the older server that would be cost effective over the three years of supported maintenance offered by Cisco. After this time, the servers would be replaced, retired, or left in service and supported locally. The Missouri State University dialup service is provided to students, faculty and staff as a free Internet service For more information, please contact one of the Networking
