Major Network Outage

Computer Services staff will be shutting down major sections of the Springfield network on Saturday, April 27th.  We will be performing equipment upgrades during this time.  Barring unforeseen circumstances, all services will be restored by midnight on April 27th.

April 16, 2002

The Missouri State University Networking staff will be upgrading a large number of devices to newer version of the operating system to add new features and to fix some management issues.  One major outage will occur first which will take down all campus networks.  This will be followed by six shorter outages effecting about one sixth of campus each time.  Finally, very short outages affecting small areas will occur all around campus.

Therefore, most users will experience one long outage early in the day, followed by one shorter outage later in the day, and finally one very short outage in the afternoon.  However, users would be wise to expect intermittent outages all day and plan accordingly.

The upgrades will start at about 8:00 a.m. and the following gives more detail regarding timing and services affected:

bulletDuring the core router upgrade, 100% of the Springfield network will be down for up to 2 hours.  This work will start at 8:00 a.m.  The following is a detailed list of implications of this outage:
bulletAll networks will be isolated from the core and, therefore, from each other.  Very localized activity will still function, but everything else will be unavailable.
bulletNo centralized file server access of any kind will be available at Springfield, Mt. Grove, or Lebanon.
bulletNo dialup services will be available at Springfield, West Plains, or Mt. Grove.
bulletUsers who are already dialed in and validated will remain connected, but they will not be able to reach any campus or Internet resources.
bulletUsers attempting to dial in will be able to connect to the modems, but they will not be validated (the system will reject their User ID and password).  Windows will most likely display some cryptic message such as "Unable to connect, error 631".
bulletUsers who are connected to the dialup servers when they are upgraded will be dropped and may not be able to dial in again until Monday.  Users not connected during the upgrade will be able to connect immediately when the servers are restored to service.  People are, therefore, encouraged to keep off of the modems during the upgrade period!
bulletInternet access will be down for Springfield, Mt. Grove, and Lebanon.
bulletDHCP services will be terminated for Springfield, Mt. Grove, Lebanon, and West Plains.  Machines at West Plains that have been on the network in their current location anytime during the past six days will function properly.  New machines or old machines in new locations (that are on a different network) will not work.
bulletWest Plains Internet will function, but DNS lookups will be slower.  A lookup is required every time a web address is entered or a web link is followed, for example.
bulletThere will be no access to the Mobius common library system from Springfield, Mt. Grove, or Lebanon since Mobius is an Internet application.
bulletFollowing the primary outage, all core zones must be updated. This will result in six individual outages for up to one hour which will take down three to fifteen buildings per zone. These six zones make up 100% of the Springfield campus.
bulletZone 1:  Burgess House, Cheek Hall, and Morris Hall (Baker Bookstore and Taylor Health Center).  Siceluff Hall, normally serviced by this zone, is not currently in use.
bulletZone 2:  Art Annex, Carrington Hall, Craig Hall, Ellis Hall, Hill Hall, Karls Hall, Kemper Hall, McDonald Arena, Public Affairs (south side - will automatically reroute and recover in less than a minute), Plaster Sports Complex, Power House, Pummil Hall, Stores and Maintenance, and Temple Hall.
bulletZone 3:  Forsyth Athletic Training Center, Glass Hall, Kings Street Annex, Meyer Library, and Public Affairs (north side - will automatically reroute and recover in less than a minute).
bulletZone 4:  Blair Shannon House, Dogwood East, Dogwood West, Florence Hall, Freddy, Greenwood, Hammons House, Madison Hall, Monroe Hall, New Hall, Plaster Student Union, Scholars House, University Hall, Wells House, and Woods House.
bulletZone 5:  Archeology Research, Hammons Student Center, Performing Arts, Elm Street Apartments, Kentwood House, Kentwood Apartments, Professional Building, Sub Station, Sunvilla House, Transportation and Operations Center, Wehr Band House, and Physical Therapy Building.
bulletZone 6:  Alumni Center, Holland Building, Levy-Wolf Building, Morris Center, and the Bank Building.
bulletOnce all core components are updated, we will upgrade remaining ancillary devices. These will take down sub-zones of one to four buildings at a time and some file servers.
bulletIf time permits and we have not been able to update the end-user access portion of the network, we will perform this function next. It will take down roughly 35% of the campus but only 23 users at a time for only two to three minutes per group of 23. We may choose, however, to update relatively large groups of 23 at a time thus shortening the total length that this affects our users.
