All Networks will be down on May 22nd, 2004 for upgrades. All services
will be interrupted.
May 6, 2004
Computer Services reserves three days a year to allow for critical updates to
be made to our computer and networking systems. The next occurrence of this
scheduled outage will occur on Saturday, May 22, 2004. Networking will be taking
down the campus networks at Springfield, Mt. Grove, West Plains, Lebanon, and
Branson to implement several improvements. Users of the networks will
experience intermittent outages throughout the day and periods will exist
throughout the day where no services are available. Outages are expected
to start shortly after 8:00 a.m. and continue until about 6:00 p.m.
However, we reserve the entire scheduled period which continues through
midnight.
Included among the updates are:
 | Operating system upgrades to fix some issues, to enhance security, and to
reduce the possibilities of specific types of denial of service attacks.
|
 | Security improvements on internal routing protocols which will help
protect us from some denial of service attacks by hackers.
|
 | The consolidation of networks serving the central server farm which will
eliminate some internal, “layer-2” issues.
|
 | The few 100 megabit core links still in existence will be replaced with 1
gigabit links. This will increase throughput and enhance reliability. |
Please contact Mark Harsen, the
Coordinator of Networking Services, if you have any questions or concerns
regarding the updates or the outages.
