Networking Service Outage February 19th, 2005
The Computer Services Networking and Enterprise Systems groups will be
performing various upgrades and replacements on Saturday, February 19th starting
at approximately 8:00 a.m. All services are expected to be restored by
midnight the same day. The major components being upgraded are:
 | Upgrade the core router in Cheek Hall. All networking services
will remain active, but most file servers will cease to operate during this
time since most are connected solely to this core. This is expected to
take many hours.
|
 | Building router upgrades in Strong and Craig Halls. Both halls and
Custodial Services will be without networking services for the duration of
the replacement. This is expected to take about an hour per router.
|
 | DNS and DHCP server upgrades will be performed to the primary, then the
backup server. Since two servers are used, no outages are expected
from this upgrade.
|
 | Core cabinet rearrangements will occur to make room for new fiber
connectivity between core locations and to set up the environment for
redundant file server attachments to the network.
|
 | VPN and Dialup Servers will be relocated and, therefore, be out of service
for 30 minutes to an hour. Validation servers for these services
will also be down intermittently during the day. During this period,
users can connect, but will not be able to logon to either VPN or Dialup.
|
 | The physical location of some file server racks are being changed to
make room for additional servers
|
 | The Springfield Internet router will be replaced causing the Internet to
be down for the duration of the upgrade which is expected to last 30 minutes
or less. |
